Glen Helen, CA - Changing venues from the indoors Pro Quad Stadium Series to the outdoors ATVA Grand National MX championship, Team Honda’s Tim Farr struck first — and struck hard — dominating the first round on his Honda TRX450R at Southern California’s Glen Helen Raceway.
The Glen Helen course was a bit slick in some spots, thanks to a light rain falling Sunday morning prior to the Pro’s first moto. The pits were buzzing, too, with talk of this season’s talent-rich Pro class and who amongst them would take home the all-important opening round victory.
Moto one saw Farr utterly rocket off the start, grabbing the holeshot around Glen Helen’s “Talledega” first corner with Team Suzuki’s Doug Gust and Jeremiah Jones, and TRX450R-mounted John Natalie in close pursuit. Natalie went after Jones several times, only to come off his TRX450R after overcooking a corner. Meanwhile, Farr held off all challengers to take the win, with Gust finishing second and Jones third.
With rain continuing to fall throughout the afternoon, the track had become very slick by the time the second moto started. All eyes were again on Farr, Gust, and Jones, all three of whom have reigned at one time or another as ATVA GNC MX champs. When the gates dropped, it was Farr again out front, racing side by side with Harold Goodman down the straightaway for the holeshot. Farr won out, and took the lead into the first corner. Goodman’s machine soon succumbed to engine problems, surrendering second to Yamaha’s Kory Ellis. Gust and Jones followed close behind.
The track was particularly greasy and rough in the tight sections, and at one point, Gust actually slid off the side of one of the turns. He recovered quickly, however, and fought to save his third-place position. Meantime, Farr continued to hold his lead up front as the slick conditions soon started claiming riders. Yamaha’s Ellis, who was still running second, was one of the first after getting sideways off the jump leading into the base of “Mount St. Helen.” Robbed of speed by the mis-landing, Ellis had nothing to hold off either Gust or Jones, and both riders shot by as Ellis and his Yamaha struggled up the hill. At the checkers, it was the same finishing order as moto one: Farr in first, with Gust second and Jones third.
“This was a great way to start the outdoor MX season,” beamed an excited Farr of his 1-1 moto sweep and overall win. “I am proud to put Honda in the winner’s circle. I would especially like to thank Baldwin Motorsports and White Brothers for working so hard these past few months. We had the TRX450R dialed in today.”
