Awareness Ride: The Awareness Ride is on May 16th.  The Honda Club and Retreads will be volunteering to stamp hands before the ride and to check for stamped hands before people have pizza after the ride. Four people are needed for before and also after the ride.  Volunteers are also needed to sell 50/50 tickets.  Sunshine, who has done this for a long time, is ill and can’t do it this year.   The ride will start at Harley Davidson and end at Rice Honda.  At a previous Black Hills Area Bikers’ meeting, it came to light that none of the previous Awareness Rides had liability insurance.  Without insurance, anyone injured could sue individuals that represent the various local motorcycle clubs.  The only motorcycle clubs who have liability insurance are the Honda Riders’ Club and the Hogs.

In an effort to support the Awareness Ride, Gabe contacted the K&K Insurance Company, which underwrites the insurance we buy for thepoker runs.  After a lot of discussion, K&K said that they would not underwrite insurance for the Awareness Ride.  Al Vogele contacted K&K directly about the possibility of setting up a separate policy for the Awareness Ride; it would require $1500 up front.  Deductions could be made from that premium amount depending upon the number of riders who participated.    Awareness Rides are sponsored nationally in May, so it would make sense to contact the American Motorcycle Association to see if they could provide a channel for insurance.  Because of the potential liability, ABATE is considering backing out of supporting the ride.  Wade would consider contacting HRCA to ask them to support underwriting of a policy by K&K for the ride.  Concern was expressed regarding how well the waiver forms previously used actually would protect the club.  The State has required that road guards be trained by the Dept. of Transportation; ABATE members have received that training.  If ABATE backs out, the ride loses quite a few road guards.  No other clubs have liability insurance, so would be unable to contribute.

Recommendation/Action:  It was moved and seconded that our club would be willing to alternate sponsorship of the Awareness Ride (every other year), and provide liability insurance through the club, with the understanding that the ride would either start or end at that club’s dealership sponsor; our club board should also be authorized to back out of the Awareness Ride if no insurance is in place for the Awareness Ride.  Wade and/or Don Rice will approach the Hog group regarding sponsoring the Awareness Ride every other year and advertise it under the clubs’ banner respectively in order to reduce the insurance premium.  The motion passed unanimously.

Meeting location:  Don Rice suggested that the club consider a change in meeting location.  The local Celtic Club has a building on the fair grounds that might be a plus for the club.  New member Glen Elshire is President of the Celtic Club and Bob Haskell is a Board Member.  The Celtic Club would allow us to use their building for monthly meetings and other events as needed; they could also provide breakfast for $5 apiece.  It could be an alternate meeting place for starting out on rides.  Wade recommended that the officers go see the building before putting this to a vote.  There are a few times a year that the building would not be available—during the Haunted House and Fair.  A concern was expressed that this could be a problem for the Celtic Club if they plan breakfast for more Honda Club members than actually show up.

Recommendation/Action:  Officers will go through the Celtic Club building after this meeting; vote is tabled until the next meeting.

Moonlight Madness Poker Run:  Highway 44 will be under construction at the time of the poker run.  It will be necessary to change the usual route to avoid the construction.  Club officers will decide on the new route, and Doug will contact Michelle at the Badlands National park to inform her of the changed route.  Doug also stated that Michelle, our usual contact for this run, will be moving out of state soon, but has arranged for the entrance fee to remain at $5.00 after she leaves.  Doug passed out a sample Aafes green (literally) grocery bag for approval to use with future poker runs to replace old paper bags.  Doug thanked Bob Garcia, who has donated United Blood Service insulated lunch boxes and T-shirts as prizes for the run.  Members who go to Deadwood and Vegas will obtain new decks of playing cards to supplement our supply.   We still have a good supply of waiver forms and will receive more when we pay for the insurance.

Membership & Mileage: Gabe ask members to check the information handed out on the membership list and contact him with any corrections. Dan was to record mileage after the meeting.
