California Dream’in
Hi Folks,
Marilyn and I just returned from a trip to California to visit the Giant Sequoia's, Yosemite National Park, and the Redwoods of Northern California. It was a very nice trip although would have been much better if Max and LouAnn had been able to get their house rented sooner and gone along as was originally planned.
We traveled I-90 to Rapid City, then 79 to Hot Springs then on to Edgemont and finally into Wyoming.Traveling to Lusk, Douglas and then to Casper. When we arrived at Casper, we decided to eat supper or late dinner and called Marilyn's cousin Pat and had her come over to visit while we had lunch. We left Casper around 6:15 PM and arrived in Rawlings, Wyo. around 8:30 PM.We spent the night there, and had a nice restful night.morning after having a continental breakfast, we headed for Rock Springs, where we decided to make a short excursion trip south to Flaming Gorge. We had talked with Max and LouAnn, and they had told us about the place. It was a nice ride, as we went down the east side of it, to John Dutch where we headed west. This took us across the dam at the lower end of Flaming Gorge to the west side.We continued to Manila, Wyo. were we stopped for gas and a hamburger and by the time we got ready to leave, it had started to rain.We put on raingear and proceeded to ride up to Evanston, Wyo. where we removed raingear, gassed up again and headed over to Salt Lake City.have been there before, but never on Motorcycle, forgot how salty the air was. wwwwwas.awbufper.Then on to bed.

We managed to stay on the right roads, so didn't have to make alternative route to continue on, continuing on to West Wendover, Nevada where again we spent the night. We went to one of the Casino's and had a very nice buffet supper. Then on to bed
The next morning we headed down on alternate hwy. 93 out of W. Wendover to connect up with hwy. 50.This is the road that is called the Loneliest Road!It isn't a bad road, but let me tell you it is very aptly named! There are gas stations spaced out good enough to make it across if you have at least a five gallon tank. You don't see very many motorists and even fewer places close enough to road to say it is a civilized location. When we arrived at Fallon, we gassed up, and found that they were selling t-shirts saying I Survived Highway 50!Almost bought 2 of them, and decided not to.Wasn't terrible bad, but wouldn't recommend traveling it to anyone! It added up to about 265 miles from Ely to Fallon.continued on until we reached Reno, Nevada where we again spent the night.Got a very nice room, and was pretty reasonably priced.Again, we ate at West Gold Casino at the buffet. What a meal!Ate too much again.Played the slots for a short time and didn't win anything!Called Max and told him I won $100,000 dollars, and was going to Buy a new Harley and take a very long vacation! He didn't believe me!Called me a liar! The nerve of some people!
The next morning after getting a good breakfast, we went south to Lake Tahoe,a beautiful ride!We continued south on hwy 395 to Lee Vining where we entered the Yosemite National Park.Very pretty ride, although running too late to get clear through the entire Park.We didn't go through the Yosemite Valley as we had to find a room for the night. We went out of the park over to Oakdale, CA which is just east of Modesto.I had been watching the back tire cut off pretty fast, so decided to get close to a dealer where I could get the tire replaced. The motel was a Best Western, and gave us a very good price on a room with an in-room Jacuzzi. We used it and was it great! No more stiff andbones and bottoms!
Getting started the next morning found us at the Modesto, CA Harley Davidson dealership. They were the worst people that I ever had the misfortune to try to do business with!Saying that they didn't have time to work on transient bikers rides when they had their own customers to keep happy.Wouldn't even try to work on mine to just change rear tire, until very late that afternoon if then!Told them where they could put their business and called the dealer in Merced, CA.What a difference. They said to hold on to verify the tire size and if they had one, came back on line and said they would get me in as soon as I arrived.45 minutes later, we were in Merced, and within 10 minutes, of arriving it was in the shop for the tire replacement.By the time we left we bought some shirts, and other memoribilia, and paid for the shop bill.Thanking them for making a pleasant experience of the stop!Told them about Medesto, and they said they weren't surprised as even their customers weren't happy with them after buying there! We continued by getting back on the road and went to the Sequoia National Monument. Was very impressed with the TREES!Talk about huge! Was worth the entire trip to see the great immense trees of this forest!By the time we were getting through the park, it was getting late again. We tried to find lodging in the park, to no avail, so proceeded south out of the park to Three Rivers were we found a room in a small resort motel. Not the Ritz, but still a clean room with a comfortable bed and conviences! Not a bad price either!
The next morning, we got up, headed over to the west to pick up I-5 back north. We made good time and decided to go back into the Yosemite Park to see the Valley that we missed the first time through the Park. Was worth the trip back to see this part.Beautiful scenery. Coming down out of the mountains this time gave us a moment or two of concern as the rear brake ceased to work for a short time. Not sure what caused the problem but it went down and wouldn't work. Stopped at a signal light for one lane traffic and while stopped, I checked to see if there was any obvious problem with it.Pedal started working again and worked great the rest of the trip, don't know what caused it, as nothing was excessively hot which could have caused it to fade.Could touch everything without burning my fingers, just uncomfortably warm was all!Anyway, life is good had brakes again! As always was getting late again, so decided to again spend the night in Oakdale Best Western, bad news, the room we had the other time wasn't available! Was disappointed until the Clerk says don't worry, they had another just like it!Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!We had another great night in and another great relaxing soak, again no more sore joints and butts!!!My Thanks to a Great Place to Stay!!The management was great as were the employees, as they went to any length to see your stay was enjoyable!
This morning we headed north on I-5 up to Red Bluff, CA where we took hwy 36 over to Fortuna, CA on the coastline.Going across this road at times was almost as bad as the Loneliest Road we were on earlier!Hot as all get out, 111 degrees according to the local temp displays. After heading north on hwy 101, the temp started dropping dramatically! By the time we reached Eureka, CA, it had dropped down to 50 degrees! The clouds were coming in off the ocean, and the humidity was 100%.We spent the night in Eureka, CA at the Best Western Motel there. We were informed that they were offering a complimentary Limosine Service to guests of the Motel for the night to take us to whatever cafe that we wanted to eat at!Was that Great Or What?Came to pick us up when we were done also!No charge, and we didn't have to sit on that narrow hard motorcycle seat to get lunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.Had a great night sleep again.
This morning we got up, looked like rain, so did Max's anti rain procedure again and proceeded on the road again!Must have had a good teacher, and been a good student, as everytime I did the procedure, it WORKED!Amazing!Anyway, there were some wet roads, but no rain by the time we went over them.Bike got a little dirty, but didn't get wet!Went on north to Klamath where we drove through the tree that Ron and Viv had told us about. There were some Asian people there taking pictures of everyone that came through the tree, so Marilyn said that she didn't get a very good picture of the bike coming through it.They (the Japanese ) came over and looked at the bike, and kept giving me the thumbs up.They were apparently out of New York. One of them came over and asked me what the bike cost, and when I told him, he informed me that was way more than he paid for his car!Oh well, when Harleys start making cars, they will be expensive too! Well, more expensive!!!!!!!!!!Anyway, we continued on through the Redwoods and up into Oregon. We proceeded up the coastline, stopping to take pictures of scenery and the ocean until we got to Coos Bay, Or, where we again stopped for the night. They were having boat races there, so were quite lucking to find a place to stay for the night.Had supper and went to bed early.
This morning Sunday, the 15th, Ron Reub called me to see where we were at, they were Bozeman, MT where they had spent the night.Dave Davis also was riding with them. They said they were going to be in Spokane, WA the next night and would we be able to have supper with them. When I told them where we were, he said there was no way that we could get there that night, I told him we would be but probably not for supper.Anyway to make this story a little shorter, we continued up the coast line for a ways further and went across to Portland, OR where we got on I-84 over to Hermiston, OR, then north to I-90 then on to Spokane, WA.Yes, we made it that night, around 8:30 PM.Got hold of Dave Davis and he talked to Motel Clerk to get a room for us.We got one of the last two available rooms there. Thanks Dave! We put gear in room, and by the time we got that done, Ron and Viv got back from where ever they had gone, and we went down to the local Perkins Restaurant to get a bite to eat.Had a great visit before going back to room and bed!Next morning we had breakfast with them and another short visit.Great Time with Good Friends!
Spent most of the rest of the trip on Interstate until we stopped at Bozeman, MT for the night.Again a good night sleep and back on the road again. No time for side trips as had to get back home for the mail route and so Marilyn could go on down to Madison, SD to see her Aunt that was in bad health.Next morning again up and on the road again. Went over to Billings, MT. then south toward Sheridan but turned off at Crow Agency on hwy 212 over to Alzada, then on to Rapid City where we stopped and had supper with Max and LouAnn at the new Pizza Ranch in Rapid City.Nice visit with Great Aquaintences, then on the road again to Philip. SD.Had a great time on the trip, and covered a total of 4550 miles in the ten days on the road.Got great pictures and a lot of nice memories to talk about
Update on Dave Gibson I talked to the VA Sat. afternoon & they are keeping Dave busy with therapy & sitting up in a chair for 30 min. at a time which they hope to increase to 2 hrs. twice a day as therapy becomes more agressive. His road rash is all bandage free now & just the one on right shoulder still touchy but healing. They exchanged his trach out for one of theirs & did well thru that, oxygen level stays between 97% & 100%. Is wearing goggles for the eyes to prevent them from drying out too much & has taken to groaning again, probably from all the movement. His feeding tube is put in at 3:00 p.m. & out at 5:00 a.m. then take it out for therapy around 9:00 to 9:30, back to room for lunch....has had a bath to eliminate the "crust" according to the nurse & a shower on Sat. The therapy team will start a communication book & each team will enter what they did that day so when a family member calls in whoever is on desk duty can look at the book & report the daily happenings. will also meet weekly to compare notes & upgrade the book so can always see the progress.
Will try & report news as time passes, thanks to all of you for keeping Dave in your prayers..........Love, Joyce
